Advice addressed to all Muslims [nearly 62 years ago] - Imaam Ibn Baz (رحمه الله رحمة واسعة)‎

We have all at one time or another been given or have givenothers advice.

But the question I ask myself is:  “For what amount of time is that advice valid?”

Sometimes, you give advice for that particular moment in time.
On other occasions it can be something that is given as a life-long reminder.
.
The question that I want you to think carefully about after reading this advice of our
Shaykh  (رحمه الله رحمة واسعةis“This adviceis it still valid after nearly 62years?”

Advice addressed to all Muslims
This was published in Al-Manhal Magazine, Vol. 12, 10 and 10, 1371 A.H., 1952 C.E.;

From Abdul-’Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Baz  (رحمه الله رحمةواسعةto every Muslim who may see it. May Allah guide them and me to the path of His believing Servants! May Allah save them and me from the path of those who have incurred Allah's anger and those who have gone astray, Ameen!

May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. I wrote these words to advise and remind Muslims according to Allah's, the Exalted, statement, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd remind (by preaching the Qur’ân, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), for verily, the reminding profits the believers.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFHelp you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwâ (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIFMoreover, Allah, the Glorified, says: "In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFBy Al-‘Asr (thetime).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFVerily, man is in loss,Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFExcept those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to thetruth [i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma‘ruf) which Allâh has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar which Allâh has forbidden], and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allâh’s Cause during preaching His religion of Islâmic Monotheism or Jihâd).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stated, " Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIFReligion is based on advising one another. Upon this, we said: For whom? He replied: For Allah, His Book, His Messenger, and for the leaders andthe general Muslims."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Narrated by Muslim.

These decisive Ayahs (Qur'anic verses) and the Noble Hadith clearly indicate that it is an Islamic obligation to remind, recommend, and advise each other to follow theright path. That is because advice benefits the Believers, directs the ignorant, guides those who are astray, awakens the negligent, reminds the forgetful, and encourages the learned to act according to their knowledge, and many other benefits.

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) created the entire creation only to worship and obey Him. He sent down Messengers to remind them of this, bring them glad tidings, and warn them as Allah, the Exalted, states, " Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd I (Allâh) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFObey Allâh, and obey the Messenger (Muhammadصلى الله عليه وسلم); but if you turn away, then the duty of Our Messenger is only to convey (the Message) clearly.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFMessengers as bearers of good news as well as of warning in order that mankind should have no plea against Allâh after the(coming of) Messengers.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFSo remind them (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) - you are only one who reminds.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF

Every knowledgeable person should remind others, advise, and invite them to follow the Cause of Allah as much as he can to fulfil the Duty of Da’wah (calling to Islam), follow the example of the Noble Prophets (peace and blessing be upon them), and avoid committing the sin of concealment which Allah has warned against in thedecisive Qur'anic verses. Allah, the Exalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFVerily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidence and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allâh and cursed by thecursers.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF It is authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"Whoever guides to something good, will have a reward similar to that of its doer."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF He (peace be upon him) also stated, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"If anyone calls others to follow right guidance, his reward will be equivalent to those who follow him (inrighteousness) without their reward being diminished in any respect. And if anyone invites others to follow error, his sin will be equivalent to that of the people who follow him (in sinfulness) without their sins being diminished in any respect."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIFBoth Hadiths were narrated by Muslim in His Sahih (authentic book of Hadiths).

If you understand the above statement, I advise you and myself to have Taqwa (wariness of offending Allah) secretly and in publicly, in distress and prosperity. This is truly the counsel of Allah and the counsel of His Messenger (peace be upon him). Allah, the Exalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd verily, We have recommended to thepeople of the Scripture before you, and to you (O Muslims) that you (all) fear AllâhDescription: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF The Prophet (peace be upon him), in his sermons, used to say, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey..."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Taqwa is a comprehensive word comprising all goodness. It isconcisely defined as the performance of theordinances of Allah and abstaining from His prohibitions out of loyalty to Him, eagerness, and desire to win His reward and fear of His punishment.Allah commands His Servants to fear Him, and in return He promises them to make their affairs easy for them, relieve their distresses, provide their livelihood, forgive their sins, and award them with Paradise. Allah, theExalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFO mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFO you who believe! Fear Allâh and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what you do.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah (Exalted be He) also says:Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah (Exalted be He) says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFVerily, for the Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2) are Gardens of delight (Paradise) with their Lord.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah also (Exalted be He) says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIF...and whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will expiate from him his sins, and will enlarge his reward.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF There are many Ayahs comprising this meaning.

O Muslims! Be mindful of Allah (in everything you do), employ Taqwa in all cases, and reproach yourselves for all your sayings, deeds, and dealings. Thus, you can do any permissible act according to Shari’ah (Islamic law) and abstain from any prohibited act according to Shari’ah even if you desire it badly, becausethe reward of Allah is better and will last forever. Whoever forsakes any act out of the fear of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something better. Whenever theservants watch and fear Allah by doing what He enjoins and abstaining from what He prohibits, Allah, the Glorified, will grant them the reward of Taqwa including honor, success, abundant sustenance, a way out from distresses, happiness and survival in this life and in the Hereafter.

It is not hidden, for those endowed with good sense and insight, that hardheartedness, renunciation of theHereafter, neglect of the causes of salvation, deep involvement in this life, assiduous pursuits to attain theworldly pleasures, and greedily paying no attention to thelegal and the illegal - afflicted the Muslims. Most Muslims continue to indulge in whims and different forms of diversion and negligence that happened as a consequence of the hearts' renunciation of the Hereafter, neglect of the Remembrance of Allah, having love for Him, or pondering over His bounties and blessings, and apparent and hidden miracles. This is because Muslims are not ready to meet Allah and do not remember that they will stand before Allah (on the Day of Resurrection) and after this awesome event they will be admitted into theParadise or the Hellfire.

O Muslim people! Save yourselves, repent to your Lord, know more about your Din (religion), hasten to obey the ordinances of Allah, and abstain from His prohibitions to win honor, safety, guidance, and happiness in this life and in the Hereafter. Beware of being engrossed in the life of this world and preferring it tothe Hereafter, for this really is an attribute of the enemies of Allah; the disbelievers and the hypocrite. It is one of themain reasons for torment in this life and in the Hereafter. Allah, the Exalted, describes His enemies stating, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFVerily, these (disbelievers) love the present life of this world, and put behind them a heavy Day (that will be hard).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF He, the Exalted, also states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFSo let not their wealth nor their children amaze you (O Muhammadصلى الله عليه وسلم); in reality Allâh’s Plan is to punish them with these things in the life of this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF

You have not been created for the life of this world but forthe Hereafter. Thus, you have been commanded to prepare for the Hereafter. This life was created for you to help you in the worship of Allah, the Creator, to facilitate your way to meet Him and earn His grace, honor, and be close to Him in the Gardens of pleasure (Paradise). It isunacceptable that a wise person abandons the worship of his Creator and Sustainer denying himself the honor that Allah has set for him. It is unacceptable to be preoccupiedby the preference of one's lower desires and thegreediness to attain the passing fancies of the life of this world. Allah has promised Muslims a greater status and noble reward in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.

Every Muslim should beware of seduction by the majority who say, "People follow such and such and they used to do such and such, so I will do like them." This is really a great disaster which has brought about the perdition of many past generations. O wise person, be mindful, reproach yourself, and cling to Al-Haqq (the Truth) even if people abandon it. Beware of every act prohibited by Allah, even if people do it. The truth should always be followed. Allah, the Exalted, says, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allâh’s Path.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah (Exalted be He) says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Some Salaf (righteous predecessors) (may Allah be Merciful to them) said, "Leave not the truth when only few people follow it and never be seduced by falsehood even if so many people fall in its abyss."

I would like to conclude my admonition with five matterswhich comprise all goodness:

First: Sincerity to Allah in all words and deeds of worship and abstinence from all types of Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship) whether minor or major. This is the foremost duty and the most important matter. This is the meaning ofthe testimony of "La ilaha illa Allah (there is no god but Allah)." The words and deeds of a servant can never be true unless they are grounded in this fundamental principle. Allah, the Exalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), as it was to those (Allâh’s Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF

Second: Understanding the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), holding fast to them both and consulting thescholars concerning matters of faith that require explanation. This is a duty for all Muslims that must neither be neglected, abandoned, nor followed according to one's own opinions and desires without knowledge and insight. This is the meaning of the creed, "Muhammad Rasul Allah (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).'' This testimony entails that a Servant of Allah must believe that Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلمis truly the Messenger of Allah, hold fast to everything he did, and believe in everything he said. He must worship Allah, the Glorified, alone inaccordance with the ordinances set by His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Allah, the Glorified, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFSay (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to mankind): "If you (really) love Allâh then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur’ân and the Sunnah), Allâh will love you and forgive you your sins.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Allah (Glorified be He) says: Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd whatsoever theMessenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it).Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIFThe Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"Whoever introduces something into this affair of ours that is not of it, it isto be rejected."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim. He (peace be upon him) also said, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"Whoever performs an act which is not based on our Shari’ah, it is to be rejected."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Reported by Muslim in his Sahih. Whoever abandons the Qur'an and the Sunnah is following his desires and disobeying his Lord, do he deserves punishment. Allah, the Exalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFBut if they answer you not (i.e. do not bring the Book nor believe in your doctrine of Islâmic Monotheism), then know that they only follow their own lusts. And whois more astray than one who follows his own lusts, without guidance from Allâh?Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF

Allah, the Exalted, describes the Kafirs (disbelievers) saying, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFThey follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Following personal desires, Allah forbid, dims the light of the heart and hinders people from the truth. Allah, the Exalted, says,"And follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allâh." You must beware of following your desires, may Allah have mercy on you! Beware of neglecting the guidance. You must adhere to the truth, call others to it, and keep away from those who oppose it in order to win theblessing of the life of this world and that of theHereafter.

Third: Performing the five obligatory prayers incongregation is the most important and greatest duty after declaring the testimony of faith. Salah is thepillar of faith, the second Rukn (pillar) of Islam, and the first thing for which a servant will be called to account on theDay of Resurrection. Whoever maintains Salah ispreserving his faith and whoever abandons it, abandons Islam. How great his regret will be and how grievous will be his punishment on the Day when he will stand before Allah! You, may Allah have mercy on you, must offer Salah diligently and advise each other to do so. You must admonish those who casually offer it and abandon it, for this is truly a form of helping one another in performing righteous and pious deeds. It is authentically reported thatthe Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"That whichdifferentiates us from the disbelievers and hypocrites is our performance of Salah. He who abandons it becomes a disbeliever."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Reported byImam Ahmad and Ahl-ul-Sunan (authors of Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes) with an authentic chain of narrators. The Prophet (peace be upon him) saidDescription: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"What makes one a disbeliever and a polytheist is abandoning Salah."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF Reported by ImamMuslim in his Sahih. Also, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H2.GIF"Whoever, among you, sees something abominable should rectify it with his hand. If he does not have strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue and if he does not have strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of Faith."Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-H1.GIF  Reported by Muslim in the Sahih.

Fourth: Giving careful attention to paying Zakah as obligated by Allah, for it is the third Rukn of Islam.Every Muslim Mukallaf (person meeting the conditions to be held legally accountable for their actions) must count his money, calculate the due amount of Zakah on a yearly basis when the money reaches the Nisab (the minimum amount on which Zakah is due). Hence, he should give it out with absolute satisfaction. He should be delighted to carry out the command of Allah, thanking Him for His blessing, and being benevolent with the Servants of Allah. Whenever a Muslim performs such an act, Allah will double his reward, give back to him what he paid, blessthe rest of his money, and purify and sanctify him. Allah, the Glorified, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFTake Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with itDescription: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF Whenever a Muslim withholds Zakah and neglects it, Allah will send His wrath upon him, remove theblessing from his wealth, afflict him with the means of spending money in bad matters, and torment him for this sin on the Day of Resurrection. Allah, theExalted, states, Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B1.GIFAnd those who hoard up gold and silver [Al-Kanz: the money, the Zakât of which has not been paid] and spend them not in the Way of Allâh, announce unto them a painful torment.Description: http://alifta.com/_layouts/images/UserControl-Images/MEDIA-B2.GIF All wealth, upon which Zakah has not been paid, isconsidered Kanz and its owner will be tormented on theDay of Resurrection. May Allah protect you and me from this!

As for Muslims who are not Mukallaf such as children andthe insane, their guardians must pay the Zakah due on their money every year, for the general evidence from theBook (Qur'an) and the Sunnah indicating the obligation of paying Zakah due on Muslims' money whether he is a Mukallaf or non-Mukallaf.

Fifth: Every Muslim Mukallaf, male or female, is to obey all the commandments of Allah and His Messenger. Sawm (Fast) of Ramadan, performance of Hajj to Ka’bah if possible, and all ordinances of Allah and His Messenger. They should glorify thesanctities of Allah, ponder over the purpose of creation, and take account of him/herself continuously. If they have fulfilled the commands of Allah, they should be pleased, thank Allah, ask Allah to grant them steadfastness, and avoid false pride, arrogance, and conceit.

If they neglect the obligations of Allah and commit any prohibited act, they should repent and feel regret. They must adhere to the commands of Allah, recite Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) and Istighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah) frequently, show humbleness to Allah, the Glorified, and ask Him to grant them repentance from their past sins and success to act righteously in word and deed. When servants of Allah are guided to achieve this, it is a sign of their happiness and security in this life and the Hereafter. On the other hand, whenever they blindly follow their desires and caprices, neglect preparation for the Hereafter, this is a sign of their perdition and evidence of their horrible loss. Search your soul, reproach it, and examine your weaknesses, so you should feel humble, focus on your own self, leave theothers, submit to Allah, and feel lowly before Him, asking Him for His pardon and forgiveness.

Such self-reproach, submission and humility before Allahis the real reason for happiness, success, and honor in thelife of this world and the Hereafter.

Let every Muslim know that all blessings including happiness, wealth, high rank, and prosperity are from the grace and benevolence of Allah. Every trial such as diseases, misfortunes, poverty, barrenness, oppressive enemies, or any other misfortune are theresult of sin and corruption.

O Servants of Allah, Fear Allah as He should be feared, glorify His ordinances and prohibitions, repent to Him from all your sins, rely on Him Alone and place your trust in Him. Verily, He is the Creator and Sustainer of all creatures and their forelocks are in His Hand (i.e. He has total mastery over His creatures). No one other than Allah has any power to cause harm, benefit, death, life, or resurrection.

Give priority to the right of Allah and His Messenger over all others', may Allah have mercy on you. Advise one another to hold fast to the right, forbid the wrong, think thebest of Allah, and devote much time to Dhikr and Istighfar. Help one another in virtue, righteousness, and piety but do not help one another in sin and transgression. Reproachthe foolish among you, let them abide by the ordinances of Allah and forbid them from His prohibitions. Love and hate only for the Sake of Allah. Follow the Awliya' (pious people) of Allah and hold aversion against the enemies of Allah. Remain patient and exhort people to patience until you meet your Lord and achieve the ultimate happiness, honor, dignity, and high rank in the Gardens of Blessing (Paradise).

May Allah grant us and you success in accomplishing thatwhich pleases Him. May Allah reconcile our hearts and fill them with His reverence, love, and fear, and enable us to call to His path and His worship. May Allah safeguard us from the evils of ourselves and our gravest sins, grant success to our rulers and all the Muslim rulers in carrying out that which pleases Him! May Allah support the Truth through them and frustrate falsehood by their hands! May Allah protect all of us from trials and tribulations, for He isthe Owner of all things, Omnipotent! May peace, mercy and blessings be upon you! Peace and blessing be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

100% OR NOTHING ?

The following question has been extracted from a posting on
www.salafyink.com may Allah reward our brother imensely for their efforts.

The links for the two part series of Q&A asked to Shaykh Ahmad Umar Bazmool can be found at the end of this post.

Second Question: Some Muslims who are not practicing say, "I am not on my Deen right now because I want to give Islam all of me, and right now I can't do that." So they leave everything that Allaah made incumbent upon them due to this claim. (Meaning) they say: "I don't want to practice just half way (one foot in and one foot out), I want to practice all the way. However because of the sins I'm committing right now, I don't want to mix this with Islam."

So what is your advice regarding this?

Shaykh: You mean that he is Muslim, but he is a sinner?

Questioner [Abu Yusuf Khaleefah]: Yes.

Answer: We say to him that there is nothing wrong that you remain upon your sins and you continue upon them up until Allaah blesses you to make a sincere tawbah - however with a condition, and it is that you are guaranteed that you will not die except after you make tawbah! Also that you are guaranteed that you will live until a time that these sins will not affect you and your heart.

This is because sins place a covering on the heart which can hinder one from making tawbah, may Allaah not decree this.

So a Muslim does not have a guarantee for himself that he won't die right now while still upon sins. So what excuse does a person make? They say, "but Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Yes, but He is also Severe in punishment. So it is incumbent that the Muslim does not feel safe from the plotting of Allaah. And it is incumbent that he does (righteous) actions and repents to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. So I'm mentioning these things in the beginning of this answer - as it is said - to sort of relate to the questioner according to the level of his intellect.

However if you are a Muslim who really comprehends what you are saying here, then listen to the following points:

The first point: who said to you that Islam wants from you that you be a Muslim who does not commit any sin at all? The Prophet - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - said: "All of the children of Adam makes many mistakes and the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent." [Authenticated by al-Albaanee in Saheeh Sunan Ibn Maajah (no.3428).]

So he - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - clarified that the children of Adam (i.e. people) fall into mistakes and errors, excluding the Prophets and Messengers, and the best of these people are those who often repent. He didn't say those who are persistent upon sins, then they make tawbah at the end. So this is the first thing.

Secondly: The Prophet - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - said to his companions: "If it wasn't that you all commit sins, Allaah would have brought a people who commit sins, and He would forgive them," or close to this meaning said by the Prophet, 'alayhis salaam.

So who said to you it is requested that you be a Muslim one hundred per cent never falling into error. No doubt that this affair is good but who can guarantee this? This is a high level. If we made it a condition for all of the Muslims, no one would ever repent.

The third matter: come with me and ponder over the statement of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic:

كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِممَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
Nay, but Rân has been placed over their hearts because of what they used to earn."
(Al-Mutaffifin 83:14)

(The word in the beginning of the ayah) Kallais a statement of rebukement. And as for Rânit means that He placed a seal over the hearts of these people. As for His statement, "because of what they used to earn," meaning the acts they used to commit. So what is the (general) meaning of the ayah? It means, due to their sins, a seal was placed over their hearts, so they could not make repentance nor can they ask for forgiveness.

That which supports this is the narration of the Prophet - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - and this is the fourth matter: "If a person commits a sin, a black spot is placed over his heart. And if he repents and refrains, it will be wiped away. However if he sins and persists upon the sins, the spots will return up until the heart becomes totally black resembling an upside down mug. It will not recognize any good nor will it rebuke any evil." [Declared 'hasan,' by al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jami' al-Saghir (1666)]

This is because of sins and not making tawbah and not returning to Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. Also, shaytaan hopes that he can win over a person by this statement [in question]. Outwardly, this statement seems good but the reality is that it is evil. This is because this means, it is as if you deem Allah too great that you sin and repent, and you deem Allah too great to fall into opposition to His command, so (based on your understanding) you (will just) remain persistent upon your sins until you're ready to repent (for good). However in reality this is an evil (thought). Also look at the advice of the Prophet - salla Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam - to Mu'adh, may Allaah be pleased with him - when he said: "O Mu'adh, fear Allaah wherever you may be." Allaah is with you [by His knowledge] wherever you may be, He sees you, and He knows your condition and He's with you with His Knowledge, the Mighty and Majestic.

 … وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ
"…And He is with you wherever you may be…"
(Hadeed: 57: 4)

"O Mu'adh fear Allaah wherever you may be and follow up a bad deed with a good deed, and it will erase it."

These are priceless words of advice. If you fall into a sin, all of the children of Adam fall into many sins, repent to Allaah, seek Allaah's forgiveness, pray two Rak'ahs for repentance to Allaah, give sadaqah, glorify Allaah, read the Qur`aan, do righteous deeds. Why all of this? So sins won't cause a seal to be placed upon your heart.

And your statement "I don’t want to repent because I want to be a believer 100 per cent." Does not the statement of the Prophet - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - refute this? "And follow up a bad deed with a good deed." Look: are you better or the Prophet – salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam? Who is more knowledgeable concerning Allaah? The Messenger of Allaah - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - is the most knowledgeable concerning Allaah, and he is the one who pointed us to that which earns the pleasure of Allaah and he pointed us to follow up a bad deed with a good deed. He didn't say, sin, sin, sin, and then repent.

I end this answer with a (another) great hadeeth and it is a glad tidings for me and you and every sinner. The Prophet - salla Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - informed of this glad tiding. He said: "If a slave commits a sin, then seeks forgiveness, Allaah will say to the angels: My slave committed a sin and then he sought my forgiveness and I forgave him. Then he committed another sin, and Allaah will say: My slave committed a sin and sought my forgiveness and I forgave him. Then the slave will commit another sin (and repented). So Allaah will say: My slave committed a sin and sought my forgiveness, and I forgave him. I testify you O My angels that I have forgiven him."

So look, (that one) makes tawbah, and then falls into a sin and then makes tawbah, and then falls into a sin. This is not from playing games and this is not from making mockery of Allaah or falling short. Rather this is the war between [us and] shaytaan who said:

قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
[Iblîs (Satan)] said: "By Your Might (Oh my Lord) I will lead all of them astray"
(Sad: 38: 82)

And also it shows that the door of tawbah is always open, concerning which Allaah has said: "And by My Might I will indeed forgive them so long as they seek forgiveness from me."

So this is the war and struggle between us and shaytaan, so beware, beware of this statement. Repent to Allaah, and seek His forgiveness every time you fall into a sin, and do not despair from the mercy of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. And Allaah said:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحًا
"Oh you who believe: turn in repentance to Allaah with a sincere repentance..."
(At-Tahrim 66:8)

'Umar and other than him from the companions and the Salaf said: Sincere repentance is that after you fall into a sin, then repent from it and never return to it up until death. Yes, this is a very high level and - if you can do it - this is something good. However that you remain upon sins and you say, 'I want to just make one tawbah for everything.' ...Just as I said to you in the beginning, who can guarantee for you that you will live to a time you can make tawbah, and who is it that can guarantee that you will have a heart that will incline to making tawbah after it was sealed due to constant sinning? So - by Allaah - be steadfast in turning (in repentance) to Allaah.

Advice to Those who are Tried with Love of the Chair and Fame

By: The Noble Shaykh Sulaymaan Ar-Ruhaylee

Before we begin the lesson, I want to remind my brothers regarding an affair; and I ask Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to place in it good and that which is beneficial. That is, the fact that from the tremendous evils and great hindrances in the path of the student of knowledge in his quest to seek knowledge and his journey to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic is love of the chair and love of fame and a desire that the people should be in need of him. Indeed this is from the great evils. The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

لا تعلموا العلم لتباهوا به العلماء، ولا لتماروا به السفهاء، ولا تخيروا به المجالس، فمن فعل ذلك فالنار النار

“Do not learn knowledge (simply) to compete with the scholars nor to argue with the foolish nor to (appear) elite within gatherings. For whoever does that, then the Fire; the Fire.”  (Ibn Maajah)

The righteous predecessors, may Allaah’s Pleasure be upon them, did not use to love fame nor did they like to be mentioned; while at the same time they loved the manifestation of the truth. Ayyoob As-Sakhtiyaanee used to say: “I was mentioned while I do not like to be mentioned.”It was said about him that when he would walk he walked through pathways wherein no one knew him. To the point that some of them (the people) would say: “I don’t know how he was guided to it (i.e. how he ever found this pathway).”

Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah the Mighty and Majestic have mercy upon him, used to say: “I wish that I could be in a mountain trail from the mountain trails of Makkah.” He said to his son:“I wish that your father was not associated with that; however, I have been tried with fame.” A calamity; he considered it to be a calamity. Hence, it is proper for the student of knowledge that she should seek knowledge with humility; and that whenever he increases in knowledge he increases in humility. Due to that, when Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah the Mighty and Majestic have mercy upon him, mentioned: “Nothing is equivalent to seeking knowledge (meaning, from the superogatory acts); for the one who makes his intention sound.” It was said to him: “How does he make his intention sound?” He said: “He is to seek it with humility and intend to benefit himself.” (the Shaykh repeats:) “He is to seek it with humility and intend to benefit himself.” So it is proper for the student of knowledge that he should always remain diligent to be humble in his seeking of knowledge; diligent upon safety. For nothing is equivalent to safety. For this reason the Salaf did not used to race toward issuing verdicts, nor did they race towards the students of knowledge (i.e., having an abundance of students). Rather, one of them would direct (people) to the other. The issue would come to him, and he would know the answer, yet he would direct to questioner to someone else; and perhaps the other one would direct him to someone else! As occurred from some of the companions, may Allaah’s Pleasure be upon them. The last one would issue a verdict and he (the questioner) would return to the second one and he would say: “Whatever he said, then I said the same.” Then he would return to the first one and he would say: “Whatever he said then I say the same.” They were not ignorant of the answer. However, they would push the fatwa to other than them from the scholars who they knew concerning them that they had knowledge and insight.

If the student of knowledge is tried with love of the chair and fame and that the people should look to them and a desire that the people should be in need of them, then he has been afflicted with a great disease. He will remain such that you will find him one who reviles the firm and trustworthy scholars for whom safety and goodness has been attested to. It is inevitable that that will drive him to revile the major trustworthy scholars; the people of goodness, the people of guidance, the people of the Sunnah; such as our major scholars from the Committee of Senior scholars, or the Permanent Committee, or other than them from the major scholars; such as Shaykh Saalih Aalsih-Shaykh, the Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad, Shaykh Rabee’ Al-Madkhalee, Shaykh ‘Ubayd Al-Jaabiree, Shaykh Saalih As-Suhaymee, and many others from those who the students of knowledge are familiar with. You find, in this vein, that which shows that he reviles these (scholars); not out of support for the religion; but because he sees them as an impediment in his path to fame.

Due to this, O brothers, when you see the scholars criticizing a thing or an individual you find, within their criticism, love of the religion, making the truth manifest, and refutation of falsehood; as you find evident within the refutations of Shaykh Rabee’ Al-Madkhalee. For the one who is just and reads the refutations of the Shaykh he will find therein love for making the religion manifest, fervent desire (for that), religiosity, and support (for the religion). Whereas you find within the speech of some that which indicates personal aspirations. Moreover he will continuously be explicit in that. So he says whenever we say something to him: “The scholars didn’t say (so and so) the scholars didn’t clarify (such and such).” So why are you saying (anything)?[1] So he clearly states the reason for his revilement of the scholars. And he will continue to come to the people with newly invented matters. Because he is, as has come on the authority of Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, that he says: “What is wrong with the people that they will not follow me? I have memorized the Qur’aan and have acquired knowledge; they will not follow me unless I invent something for them.” So he invents an affair for them by which he can become famous. Either he falls into an innovation wherein he attacks (others) with Takfeer or he comes with innovations wherewith he opposes that which Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah were upon, from the various types of Bid’ah in order that he will become famous and be recognized by way of it. When the scholars clarify to him that it is an innovation he becomes arrogant and rebuts them. The rebuttal is not done with the truth; it is only a rebuttal with falsehood.

I say this, O brothers, as an advice to myself (and O how I am in need of that), and as an advice to my brothers so that we do not fall into this calamity. I ask Allaah the Mighty and Majestic by His beautiful Names and lofty Attributes that He cures those who have been afflicted with this and that he returns him to guidance, truth, and the Sunnah. And that He makes him, if he returns, to be a sign from the signs of the Sunnah. And that He suffices me and you from the evils of this calamity. And that He makes us to be righty-guided guides who love goodness and its people and who support the truth and its people. This is a statement which I gave in response to a question which one of the students of knowledge asked me regarding this topic. I ask Allaah to place good within my speech and to make it good and beneficial.

[1] The Shaykh seems to ask this rhetorically; and Allaah knows best. i.e. If the scholars didn’t speak on an issue, as you claim, then why are you speaking on it?

The Advice of Shaykh Al-Albaanee to Women who act like men
Translated By: Raha ibn Donald Batts
http://mtws.posterous.com
Question:
O our Shaykh, we have heard that some of the women present within some of the universities, schools, and colleges or some of the women who deliver lectures, (give) lessons or even recite the Qur’aan specifically on the morning broadcasts (we have heard that) these women’s husbands are never able to enjoy them because they are Mutarajjilaat (i.e. they imitate men or are masculine). We would like some clarity from you as it relates to this question.
Answer:
The principle as it relates to this issue is a poor upbringing. From the reasons for the poor upbringing is the corruption of the society and corruption of the curriculums which the education of the men and women or male and female youth is predicated upon their foundation. That is because the female students in the schools, I am almost certain, have not heard the likes of his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) statement:
لعن الله الرَجُلة من النساء
“May Allaah curse the manly women.”
Likewise, the other Hadeeth which ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated saying: “Allaah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) cursed the men who resemble women and the women who resemble men.” I believe that the female students who graduate from the high schools or from that which is above that, then likes of this Hadeeth or that Hadeeth (the first one) has not crossed their ears. And if it be that either of them has crossed their ears on any day, then it is from that which goes in one ear and out of the other ear. Because the curriculums which are taught or the lessons which are given on the basis of them do not allow the teacher, even if she may be religious, to go over the likes of this subject.
It is known within the legislation, and according to the people who have knowledge regarding it, that the basic principle with the man is that he goes out of his home to work for the benefit of his family and his children. On the contrary, the basic principle regarding the woman is that she remains sheltered within her house and that she does not go out of it acting in accordance with the statement of her Lord, the Blessed and High:
وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلَا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الْأُولَى
“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…” (Al-Ahzaab 33:33)
So when the woman came to be like the man; going out in the morning, and returning in the evening; then she came to be, in that, similar to the man whether she knows it or not and whether she realizes it or not.
Due to this, we have not returned in these later times to seeing the adolescent virgin girls who are ashamed to let their vision fall upon a man. Rather, she, from the severity of her modesty, would cast her vision to the ground to look at her footsteps while she is walking. We have not returned to seeing this young lady who, the likes of her, was well known; even during the times of pre-Islamic ignorance, not to mention during the era of the early, radiant, pure Al-Islaam. In this vein, there has come within the Saheeh, in description of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that he: “Was shyer than a virgin within her dwelling.”
This virgin to whom the leader of mankind (alayhis-salatu was-salaam) has been compared in his shyness, we have not returned to hearing about her in this time of ours. That is because in most instances the women resemble the men. There is no doubt that there are many reasons for this. From the most prominent of them, is the rule of the governments of the Kuffaar over many of the Islaamic lands, so that their habits, traditions, tastes, and their manners which are contrary to the upright disposition have spread therein. So the generations of people have inherited them and the male and female professors who claim to guide (the youth) have accepted them. All of these (people) have spread amongst this upcoming generation of young men and young ladies what they refer to as equality between women and men. So this is from the reasons from the spread of the scanty amount of modesty amongst the women which has made many of them to be masculine. From that in which there is no doubt is that the manliness of the woman makes her have a presumptive personality in front of her husband; perhaps raise her voice at him, and maybe she will humiliate him in front of some of his or her relatives (out of supposed) superiority on her part over her husband.
Where is this as it relates to that which has come in the farewell advice of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to the man regarding the women? This is substantiated by his (alayhis-Salaam) statement using a justification which is in complete opposition to the upbringing which we see in this present time. That is his (alayhis-Salaam) statement:
استوصوا بالنساء خيرًا ، فإنهن عوانٍ عندكم
“Treat the women well, for they are ‘awaan to you.”
The point of reference is that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) when he ordered with good treatment to the women in this Hadeeth, he (alayhis-Salaam) justified that by his statement:
فإنهن عوانٍ عندكم
“…for they are ‘awaan to you.”
Meaning, they are like slaves. The slave is not able to do anything with his master. Likewise, is the Muslim woman who conducts herself with the correct Islaamic manners. She is, with her husband, like a slave.
Due to this, he (alayhis-Salaam) feared for the men to be excessive, in this befitting description, towards the women and thus wield authority over them, compelling them, and oppressing them. For this reason he ordered with good treatment towards the women and me mentioned a reason for that; and that (reason) is his statement:
فإنهن عوانٍ عندكم
“…for they are ‘awaan to you.”
The women today have become such that the men are not in need of advice regarding them. Rather, the affair has changed and become such that the women are in need of being advised to treat the men well because they have become independent in their jobs and in their liberties. We often hear from some of them: “There is no difference therein between me and my husband. He is a spouse and I am a spouse. He is a partner and I am a partner with him in life.”
So it is upon the Muslim women who cling to their religion that if they are tried with anything from mixing with this society, that they try to save themselves from being affected by anything from this filth which many of the women have fallen into because of what we have mentioned from corruption in the upbringing and corruption of the society. This is a reminder and the reminder benefits the believer. As-Salaamu Alaykum.
Questioner:
May Allaah reward you with good, wa Alaykum As-Salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.
